PRIORITY POLICIES
The Ministry’s programmes and sub-programmes are within the context of
the priority policies that the Ministry has highlighted for focus and for which
approval is given by Cabinet to implement the Ministry’s initiatives. The
policy priorities that inform the development of the Ministry’s programmes
over the medium term are:
I. Improved Public Order: Public Order is the general state of
respect/adherence to the rule of law. It guarantees basic human rights to all
individuals living under the Jamaican jurisdiction. Public order is achieved
when criminal and disruptive acts are reduced to an acceptable minimum
and when perpetrators of both low- and high-intensity crimes are pursued,
apprehended, detained, prosecuted, convicted and rehabilitated.
II. Reduced Crime and Violence: Reduction in Crime and Violence marks a
desirable and sustained rate of reduction in crime and acts of violence, which
will positively impact the perception of safety index. Reduction in crime and
violence not only warrants coordinated efforts to prevent more heinous
crimes, such as murder, rape and trafficking in persons; it also necessitates
measures to intercept financial crimes and dismantle trafficking in arms and
contraband operations.
III. Improved Public Safety: Public Safety guarantees the sustained and
systematic protection of the life, property and privacy of individuals living
within Jamaica’s borders. Improving Public Safety involves the protection
from and prevention of dangers, such as: violent extremism and terrorism,
organised crime, cybersecurity breaches/attacks, espionage and the illegal or
undocumented movement of goods and people.
